James McCann, backup catcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, suffered a right quad strain during a game against the San Francisco Giants on May 19, 2026. He was entered as a defensive replacement and beat out an infield single in the eighth inning before gingerly walking off the field with the athletic trainer. Manager Torey Lovullo confirmed McCann would likely need to go on the injured list. McCann was officially placed on the 10-day IL with the quad strain, and is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks. Aramis Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Reno to replace McCann on the active roster.
Strengths
- + Able to record an infield single before injury occurred
- + Diamondbacks have depth at catcher position with Gabriel Moreno and Adrian Del Castillo available
Weaknesses
- - Right quad strain requiring IL placement
- - Expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks of action
- - Injury occurred during routine defensive replacement duty
- - Backup catcher role limits offensive impact but removes depth option
Injury Status: IL-10
