Scouting Report

Updated May 20, 2026

Cubs right-hander Hunter Harvey suffered a setback in his recovery from triceps inflammation, with an MRI revealing a stress reaction in his triceps area. He will be out of action for at least another month and is expected to be moved to the 60-day IL. Harvey has already missed over a month of action since his last game on April 8. This continues a career pattern of injury issues - Harvey has only pitched 189 innings over 186 games since his 2019 debut. In 2025, he pitched just 10 2/3 innings with the Royals due to a teres major strain and Grade 2 adductor strain. The Cubs signed him to a one-year, $6.5MM deal, but he posted a 6.75 ERA over four innings before the triceps issue arose.

Strengths

  • + Solid career ERA of 3.07 when healthy
  • + Strong strikeout rate of 27.4% in recent seasons
  • + Low walk rate of 6.5% demonstrates control
  • + Posted 3.07 ERA, 27.4 K%, 6.5 BB% over 161.1 IP with Nationals and Royals (2022-25)

Weaknesses

  • - Career defined by injuries with frequent extended absences
  • - Stress reaction in triceps requires at least one more month recovery
  • - Already missed over one month of 2026 season
  • - Poor early 2026 performance with 6.75 ERA over 4 innings with Cubs
  • - History of multiple injury types: teres major strain, Grade 2 adductor strain, triceps inflammation
  • - Only 189 innings pitched over 186 games since 2019 debut
  • - Durability concerns limit value despite solid performance when available

Injury Status: IL-60
