Cionel Pérez, a 30-year-old left-handed reliever, signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets after being designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals. Pérez had an impressive spring training with the Nationals (7 scoreless innings, 0.50 WHIP, 7 K) and made the Opening Day roster, but struggled significantly during the regular season. In 16 innings with Washington, he posted a 6.19 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, with 11 walks and only 9 strikeouts. He surrendered runs in three consecutive appearances after his debut and was designated for assignment after five weeks. Pérez will report to Triple-A Syracuse and must improve his control to earn a spot in the Mets' bullpen.
