Scouting Report

Updated May 19, 2026

Gavin Lux was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays from the Reds over the offseason to be their primary second baseman. However, he has been plagued by multiple injuries throughout the 2026 season and has yet to make his MLB debut. Initially placed on the IL with a right shoulder impingement in mid-March, he suffered a left ankle sprain in April during his first rehab assignment. After being cleared to resume rehab, he was pulled off his assignment in May due to a new left shoulder injury. Manager Kevin Cash indicated Lux would be out "for the foreseeable future" pending imaging results. In his Triple-A rehab stint, Lux struggled offensively, hitting .200 with 1 HR across 21 games (90 PA), though he did draw 20 walks against 23 strikeouts. The timing is particularly unfortunate as Lux is heading into free agency next winter and was already considered a reclamation project after being a league-average hitter the past two seasons with the Reds.

Strengths

  • + Disciplined approach with 20 walks in rehab assignment
  • + Acquired as intended primary second baseman suggesting organizational confidence
  • + On-base skills demonstrated (.329 OBP in later rehab stint)
  • + Opportunity for fresh start with new organization

Injury Status: IL-60
