Scouting Report
Updated May 20, 2026
Mason Black was optioned to Triple-A Nashville by the Milwaukee Brewers to open an active roster spot following Christian Yelich's activation from the 10-day injured list. Black had been receiving DH reps during Yelich's absence due to a left groin strain and performed well alongside Gary Sánchez. However, with Yelich, Andrew Vaughn, Jake Bauers, and the catching tandem of William Contreras and Sánchez all healthy and competing for at-bats, Black has limited playing time opportunities. He is a first baseman/corner outfielder with this being his final minor league option year.
Strengths
- + Performed well during DH reps while Yelich was injured
- + Demonstrated ability to contribute at the major league level
- + Still has minor league options remaining for development
Weaknesses
- - Limited defensive value restricts playing time opportunities
- - Crowded roster with multiple established hitters (Yelich, Vaughn, Bauers, Contreras, Sánchez)
- - No clear path to regular playing time on current roster
- - Final minor league option year creates urgency
- - Lacks positional flexibility (not used as third baseman since 2024)
