Scouting Report
Updated May 19, 2026
Matt Strahm, acquired by the Royals from the Phillies in December 2025 for $4.5MM, was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 16, 2026, due to right knee inflammation. The injury occurred during his appearance on Friday, May 15th. Strahm has a history of knee inflammation issues (September 2020 and 2021), but both previous instances resulted in brief absences (12 days and 2 weeks respectively). Despite his excellent 2.30 ERA in 125 relief innings from 2024-25 and 2024 All-Star nomination, his 2026 performance has been inconsistent with a 3.86 ERA and 23.9% strikeout rate, both worse than the previous year. His velocity is also down, with his four-seamer declining from 92.2 to 91.1 MPH.
Strengths
- + History of quick recovery from knee inflammation (12 days in 2020, 2 weeks in 2021)
- + Fully healthy from 2023 onward prior to current injury
- + Excellent track record with 2.30 ERA in 125 relief innings from 2024-25
- + 2024 All-Star nomination
- + Experienced lefty reliever acquired at affordable salary
- + Royals expect quick return based on historical precedent
Injury Status: IL-15
