Scouting Report
Updated May 19, 2026
Josiah Gray, 28-year-old right-handed pitcher for the Washington Nationals, has resumed throwing after being placed on the 60-day injured list in late March 2026 with a right flexor strain. This is his first throwing activity since the diagnosis. Gray is being brought along slowly in his rehab program before evaluation for potential return to the Nationals' rotation. Gray was previously recovering from Tommy John surgery before the flexor strain setback. He was last on the mound on April 4, 2024.
Strengths
- + Resumed throwing program after extended absence
- + Positive injury update from team
- + Potential top-of-rotation arm when healthy
- + Young at 28 years old with upside
- + Team investing in his recovery
- + Slow, methodical rehab approach reduces re-injury risk
Weaknesses
- - Right flexor strain is significant injury
- - Recently returned from Tommy John surgery before this setback
- - Injury history has prevented reaching projected ceiling
- - Extended time away from competition (last appeared April 4, 2024)
- - Uncertain timeline for return to active roster
- - Multiple setbacks in 2026 season (plyometrics to throwing progression)
Injury Status: IL-60
