Humberto Cruz, a 19-year-old San Diego Padres pitching prospect signed for $750,000 in February 2024, pleaded guilty in November to a federal misdemeanor charge related to transporting undocumented immigrants. Cruz was arrested on October 28 while rehabbing from Tommy John elbow surgery at the Padres' spring training facility in Arizona. He acknowledged in his plea agreement that deportation is "practically inevitable and a virtual certainty." The Padres believe he has lost his work visa for 10 years, though he can apply for reinstatement after five years with good behavior. Cruz has self-deported to Mexico. He was sentenced to 30 days in prison with credit for time served. The Padres placed him on the restricted list in March.
