Scouting Report
Updated May 20, 2026
Humberto Cruz, 19-year-old San Diego Padres pitching prospect ranked #5 in their system, pleaded guilty in November 2025 to a federal misdemeanor charge related to transporting undocumented immigrants in Arizona. Arrested on October 28 near Lukeville, Arizona, Cruz admitted to responding to a social media advertisement offering "easy money" and expected $1,000 per passenger. Two undocumented Mexican citizens were found in his BMW SUV, including one who had been deported days earlier. Cruz acknowledged deportation was "practically inevitable and a virtual certainty" and has since self-deported to Mexico. He will lose his work visa for 10 years, though he can reapply after five years with good behavior. This comes while Cruz was rehabbing from Tommy John elbow surgery performed in August 2025, which was expected to sideline him for the 2026 season.
