Scouting Report
Updated May 19, 2026
Gavin Lux has been pulled off his rehab assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays due to a left shoulder injury, marking his third injury setback in recent months. The 2B/DH was acquired from Cincinnati over the offseason to be Tampa Bay's primary second baseman but has yet to make his MLB debut. He previously suffered a right shoulder impingement in mid-March and a left ankle injury in April. Lux will undergo imaging and is expected to be moved to the 60-day IL. He has appeared in 21 Triple-A games hitting .200 with 1 HR, 20 walks, and 23 strikeouts across 90 PA. The timing is particularly unfortunate as he enters free agency next winter as a league-average hitter seeking a reclamation opportunity.
Strengths
- + Acquired by Rays as reclamation project with fresh opportunity
- + League average hitter over past two seasons
- + Decent plate discipline shown in Triple-A (20 walks in 90 PA)
Weaknesses
- - Multiple injury setbacks in short timeframe (right shoulder, left ankle, left shoulder)
- - Has not made MLB debut with new team
- - Poor Triple-A performance (.200 BA, 1 HR in 21 games)
- - High strikeout rate in minors (23 K in 90 PA)
- - Entering free agency with injury concerns and limited opportunity to prove value
- - Manager indicated he'll be out 'for the foreseeable future'
- - Recurring shoulder issues suggest potential chronic problem
Injury Status: IL-60 -- Left shoulder injury requiring imaging; previously suffered right shoulder impingement (mid-March) and left ankle injury (April)
