Scouting Report
Updated May 20, 2026
Red Sox pitching prospect Juan Valera, 19-year-old Dominican right-hander, underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in May 2026 after suffering an injury during his third start of the season for High-A Greenville on April 16-19. Initially diagnosed as elbow inflammation, subsequent MRI revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament requiring surgical reconstruction by Dr. Jeffrey R. Dugas at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center. This marks the second consecutive season Valera has suffered an elbow injury, having missed three months in 2025 with elbow soreness. Prior to the injury, Valera was off to an impressive start with a 1.93 ERA, 17 strikeouts in 9.1 innings, and had recently been added to Baseball America's Top 100 Prospect list. He is expected to miss the remainder of 2026 and likely into the 2027 season.
