Scouting Report
Updated May 20, 2026
Gavin Lux has been pulled off his rehab assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays due to a left shoulder injury, marking his third injury setback in 2026. He initially suffered a right shoulder impingement in mid-March, was later delayed by a left ankle sprain in April, and now faces a new left shoulder injury requiring imaging. Manager Kevin Cash indicated Lux will be out "for the foreseeable future." Lux has yet to make his MLB debut with the Rays after being acquired from the Reds in the offseason. During his Triple-A rehab assignment, he struggled offensively, hitting .200 with 1 HR across 90 plate appearances with 20 walks and 23 strikeouts. The timing is particularly unfortunate as he enters free agency next winter as a reclamation project after being league average the past two seasons.
Strengths
- + Disciplined approach with 20 walks in rehab assignment
- + Acquired as intended primary second baseman for positional opportunity
- + Potential for fresh start with new organization
- + Still relatively young with time to recover
Weaknesses
- - Multiple injury setbacks in short timeframe (right shoulder, left ankle, left shoulder)
- - Poor offensive performance in rehab (.200 BA, .288 SLG)
- - High strikeout rate (23 K in 90 PA)
- - Has not made team debut yet
- - Entering free agency with injury concerns
- - Manager indicated extended absence
- - Recurring shoulder issues suggest durability concerns
- - League average hitter status makes injury recovery critical to value
Injury Status: IL-60 -- Left shoulder injury requiring imaging; previously suffered right shoulder impingement (mid-March) and left ankle sprain (April)
