Summary
Clay Holmes, a 33-year-old right-handed starting pitcher for the New York Mets, suffered a fractured right fibula on May 16, 2026, when struck by a 111 mph line drive off the bat of Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones during a game. Holmes was placed on the 60-day injured list. While surgery is not required, he is expected to miss 6-8 weeks for initial healing, followed by an additional 4-6 weeks of spring training-style ramp-up. Manager Carlos Mendoza expressed optimism that Holmes could return sometime in August. Prior to the injury, Holmes was performing well for the Mets with a 4-4 record and 2.39 ERA in 2026, and had posted a 12-8 record with 3.53 ERA in his first season with the team after signing a $38 million, three-year contract.
