Overall
Summary
Juan Valera, a 19-year-old Red Sox RHP prospect, underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2026 after suffering an elbow injury during his third start of the season with High-A Greenville. The injury marks the second consecutive season he has dealt with elbow issues (missed 3 months in 2025 with elbow soreness). Prior to surgery, Valera was off to an impressive start, posting a 1.93 ERA with 17 strikeouts over 9.1 innings in three starts. He was recently added to Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects list and is ranked as Boston's No. 4 prospect. MLB.com scouts have suggested a potential future as a closer due to his durability concerns as a starter.
