Summary
Rangers second baseman Josh Smith has been sidelined since May 4 with a right glute strain and subsequently developed wrist inflammation during his rehab process. Most critically, Smith was hospitalized for viral meningitis, requiring at least 7-10 days of hospitalization. Prior to injuries, Smith was struggling offensively with a .217/.324/.239 slash line across 31 games with no home runs and 6 RBIs. Backup infielders Ezequiel Duran and Justin Foscue have performed well in his absence.
