Scouting Report: Matt Whatley
Chicago Cubs | C
Overall
Summary
Matt Wallner was demoted to Triple-A by the Minnesota Twins after struggling significantly at the plate. The 28-year-old right fielder is batting .167 with a .551 OPS in 120 at-bats, posting the worst strikeout rate in MLB with 53 strikeouts in 135 plate appearances. He struck out in eight consecutive at-bats before the demotion. Manager Derek Shelton indicated this is a "reset" opportunity, noting that Wallner has shown success at the major league level when given consistent at-bats. The demotion also reflects the team's desire to provide more playing time for Austin Martin in the outfield.
