Scouting Report: Bennett Sousa
Houston Astros | RP
Overall
Summary
Houston Astros reliever Bennett Sousa placed on 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 6) due to left elbow inflammation. This marks his second IL stint in 2026 - he previously missed the first month with an oblique injury sustained in spring training. Sousa was reinstated April 25 and made five appearances (3⅓ innings, 3 runs allowed) before the elbow issue surfaced. He last pitched Monday against the Dodgers, throwing a scoreless inning on eight pitches in his third appearance in four days. The elbow inflammation is concerning given Sousa missed the final month of 2025 with a low-grade elbow flexor/pronator strain. Jayden Murray was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to replace him. The Astros now have 15 players on the IL, including nine pitchers.
Strengths
- Had a 2.84 ERA in 44 relief outings prior to last year's elbow strain
- Was considered a leverage option for Houston before injury
