Summary

Ben Rice, Yankees first baseman and AL batting leader, suffered a left-hand contusion on Sunday when he misjudged a pickoff throw from Max Fried. He has missed three consecutive games but remains day-to-day with hopes of avoiding IL placement. Manager Aaron Boone indicated the injury does not appear to require a 10-day IL stint. Rice was leading the AL with a .343 batting average and 1.214 OPS before the injury, with 12 home runs and 27 RBIs. The Yankees have won their first two games without him and remain hopeful for his quick return.
