Scouting Report: Angel Zerpa

Milwaukee Brewers | RP

Overall

IL-60

Summary

26-year-old left-handed reliever Angel Zerpa acquired by Milwaukee Brewers from Kansas City Royals in December 2025 (traded Isaac Collins and Nick Mears). Zerpa was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his left elbow requiring Tommy John surgery. He was placed on the 15-day IL retroactive to April 26, 2026, after experiencing forearm tightness during a game against Pittsburgh Pirates on April 25. His last outing was in the 10th inning when catcher William Contreras noticed something was off. In 12 appearances before injury, Zerpa posted a 0-2 record with 6.39 ERA and 2 saves, allowing at least one earned run in each of his final three outings. Surgery scheduled for early May 2026 with expected recovery timeline of 14+ months, sidelining him for remainder of 2026 season and likely start of 2027. The trade is now viewed as a rare miss for Milwaukee's front office.

Strengths

  • Strong spring training performance with no earned runs allowed in 6 WBC appearances for Team Venezuela
  • Solid career resume with Kansas City (177 innings, 3.97 ERA, 4.13 FIP over 5 seasons)
