Scouting Report: Jared Jones
Pittsburgh Pirates | SP
Overall
Summary
Jared Jones, 24-year-old Pirates RHP, is progressing through his rehab assignment following UCL reconstruction surgery in May 2025. He missed the entire 2025 season but has made three minor league rehab starts (April 29 with Bradenton: 3 IP, 0 H, 5 K; May 6 with Indianapolis: 3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 K; May 12 with Altoona: 4 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 4 K). Jones has maintained elite velocity (100+ mph fastball) throughout rehab. He is adamant about returning to the starting rotation, emphatically rejecting any bullpen role. Pirates GM Ben Cherington expects Jones to make several more minor league starts before MLB return, likely early June. Jones was impressive in his 2024 rookie season (6-8, 4.14 ERA, 132 K in 22 starts).
Strengths
- Maintained elite fastball velocity (100.1 mph peak, 98.8 mph average) post-surgery
- Progressive improvement across rehab starts with increasing innings pitched
