Scouting Report: Chris Davis
St Louis Cardinals | 1B
Overall
Summary
Chris Martin, 39-year-old Rangers right-handed reliever, has been sidelined since April 15 with a right shoulder impingement. He progressed through rehab with bullpen sessions and live batting practice, clearing him for a Triple-A rehab assignment beginning May 12-13. However, his first rehab appearance at Triple-A Round Rock on May 13 was concerning: he allowed 4 runs on 4 hits in 2/3 inning, including 2 home runs on his splitter. This continues a troubling trend from his early season performance where opponents hit .667 against his splitter with a 1.000 slugging percentage and zero whiffs. Prior to injury, Martin posted a 7.11 ERA in 8 games and struggled significantly with his splitter command, a pitch that was his most valuable weapon last season.
Strengths
- Physically felt good during rehab appearance
- Successfully progressed through multiple bullpen sessions without issue
