Summary

Gavin Lux was pulled off his rehab assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays on May 12, 2026, due to a left shoulder injury. This marks the third injury setback for Lux in 2026: he initially suffered a right shoulder impingement in mid-March, then tweaked his left ankle in April which halted his first rehab stint, and now has developed a left shoulder injury. Lux has yet to make his MLB debut with the Rays after being acquired from the Reds in the offseason. He was intended to be Tampa Bay's primary second baseman but has been unable to stay healthy. In 21 Triple-A games, he hit .200 with 1 home run across 90 plate appearances with 20 walks and 23 strikeouts. Manager Kevin Cash indicated Lux will be out "for the foreseeable future" pending imaging results later in the week. The Rays will likely move him to the 60-day IL, which would backdate to Opening Day, making him eligible to return in less than two weeks, though Cash's comments suggest he won't be ready by then. This is particularly ill-timed as Lux will be a first-time free agent next winter.

Strengths

  • Acquired by Rays as reclamation project with fresh start opportunity
  • League average hitter over last two seasons with Reds
